Prioritizing Your Pet’s Oral Health
Oral hygiene, like in humans, is very important for your pet’s overall health. Our doctors recommend brushing your pet’s teeth at least two times weekly with animal-appropriate toothpaste. We carry a clinically proven product called Perio Support Pro that is sprinkled onto your pet’s food daily which provides an alternative if your pet won’t allow tooth brushing. Feel free to ask about other available options if you are curious about products to support your pet’s oral health and hygiene! During your pet’s routine physical exam, the doctor will examine your pet’s teeth and gum line. At this time they will discuss whether or not an oral hygiene procedure should be performed.
Oral hygiene procedures are typically an out-patient procedure. We normally schedule oral hygiene procedures on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays. All oral hygiene procedure patients must be fasted after 10:00 PM the night before their procedure, however, providing water is always okay for your pet! Your pet would be admitted to our practice between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM the morning of their procedure and a pick-up time for your pet would be scheduled later that same afternoon.
Procedure Guidelines
Antibiotics prior to the oral hygiene procedure may be recommended and will typically be continued for a period of time after the procedure. Due to the nature of dental disease, our doctors strongly encourage bloodwork prior your pet’s procedure to evaluate your pet’s internal organs, and assure your pet doesn’t have any increased risks prior to undergoing anesthesia.
